hyperfunction

2022

In my master’s thesis ‘Hyperfunction: Functional Fashion for Modern Urbanites,’ I created a jacket that materialized the observational research on human behavior that I conducted within the metropolitan area of Milan.

Over the course of several months, observation-based research was conducted on the urban population of Milan. Combined with market and literature-based research, the need for an elegant, yet function-based garment for modern urbanites emerged.

Embracing the technological and material possibilities presented by Pangaia Grado Zero, the Hyperfunction jacket was born for performance, function, and protection from the ever changing urban landscape. It's a water-proof, multi-pocket system that was built from Italian textiles.

This project was completed during my residency in the Fashion-Tech Alliance program. Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, I was placed under the supervision of Pangaia Grado Zero (PGZ) to complete Hyperfunction, a project that embodied the themes and principles of the fashion-tech sector.

The development of the project started with extensive ethnographic research on the urban population of Milan. How the city moves and undulates in response to the world.

I collected over one hundred photos and created annotations for them that I thought reflected the energy of the city.

Observations also have extracted metadata to create an image of the city on that day.

From these observations, I explored material and garment features that would accommodate the patterns in behavior, climate condition, and actions.

As a result, I drafted the patterns and constructed a water-resistance performance jacket with a host of features for the urban citizen.

Embedded discretely in the jacket are several large pockets for holding the user's things.

The jacket has buckles that allow it to be wrapped and secured across the body.

The front pockets actually have embedded pockets that can be accessed from the top.
